Denver Chalk Art Festival 2018

Image
This year I participated in the 16th Annual Denver Chalk Art Festival in Larimer Square. It was my second year joining the festival. Two hundred artists gathered together to create beautiful temporary works of art. The two day festival celebrates this wonderful process. The majority of the artists had an 8'x 8' square on a denver street to draw on. All works were created using pastel chalks in all colors. Some of the drawings were realistic, some creative, some were 3D but all were uniquely beautiful. The artists had just two days to complete their chalk drawings. At the end of the weekend these beautiful works are washed from the streets. Thousands of people from all over Colorado come out to view this temporary and magnificent display of artistry. It's a great way to meet artists and have a wonderful time in Downtown Denver. Make sure you come out next year and experience this awesome festival of creativity.

Habits of the busy Artist

Image
These are some habits I have developed on my journey to becoming a Freelance Artist. Keeping a planner This one is a must for me. I have consistently kept a planner for 7 years now. My planner of choice is a 8"x5" Moleskine weekly planner. In it I schedule out appointments, mural dates, commission deadlines and events. I also have been getting into the habit of recording special moments in my planner. These are just wildlife sightings, happy moments and anything I'd want to remember about that year. It's important to record your inspiration in a notebook or sketchbook. Time management Learn how you spend your time creating. Some creators are night owls, some are early birds, and some are most productive in the middle of the day. If you know what times you're creative most, you can schedule accordingly. I usually schedule out my week every Sunday. I will block out days and time frames in my planner. You can use your digital calendar if that's what you...

Why you should keep a sketchbook

Image
My sketchbook collection   I am obsessive about my sketchbooks, since 2006 I have consistently kept one. Every year they get filled up with all sorts of images, photos, notes & quotes. I have a whole catalog of them dated & stacked.  When I look through them I can remember that part of my life. I remember the way I felt and the things that happened. Its sort of a visual diary, recording moments in my life.  Its great practice to draw so much and in a way its my therapy. You don't have to be an artist to keep a sketchbook. If you are a creative person, its a great little way to collect ideas and practice. You can gather your ideas and try new things without showing anyone or being scared you will be judged. The whole point is to express yourself in your own way. Create your own      rules,  or no rules at all. Here are a few things that help me fill up my sketchbooks. The Dreaded First Page If you are intimidated...

My Journey into Fly Fishing

Image
Me learning how to cast. It all started when I wanted a bike, yes, a bike! It was last summer and all I wanted was a cruiser bicycle to ride around in my neighborhood. After showing my husband all the bikes I wanted, he suggested we spend the money on a fly rod and reel.  We had been talking about getting in to fly fishing for a while so it was a no-brainer.  Cabelas Prestige rod and reel We went to Cabelas and found the Prestige kit. It has a rod, reel, line, and all the tools you need to start out. We also found some Cabelas brand waders and boots that were a great price. I was all ready to fish and all for under $400.  The next day we went to the South Platte River near Deckers, CO. I watched my husband cast for a while and he insisted I hop into the river and give it a go. I was very awkward at first, I felt very silly doing something I had never done, but I asked a million questions and tried to mimic his cast over and over. It took a few days, fou...

My most prized recipe: Vegan BANANA BREAD!!!

Image
My Husband and I have been vegan for almost 4 years and it has been life changing. It forced us to change our bad eating habits and to cook more at home. Going vegan has been an amazing journey. Through the years there have been some recipes we found that are so delicious we make the m ag ain and again ! This banana bread recipe is one of them. It is simple, easy and pretty fool proof. There are 7 ingredients in my banana bread and most of them can be subsituted for different brands or variations. For the salt, you don't have to use kosher, you can use any salt you'd like.  Personally, the yogurt I use is Daiya's blueberry non-dairy yogurt. You can use whatever brand or flavor you like. Even if you don't want a vegan banana bread just use normal yogurt. Any sugar will do for this recipe, I've even used stevia and truvia sugar replacement and it still bakes and tastes great! In a pinch I have used olive oil in this recipe and it works out fine! For the bana...
