My Journey into Fly Fishing

Me learning how to cast.
It all started when I wanted a bike, yes, a bike! It was last summer and all I wanted was a cruiser bicycle to ride around in my neighborhood. After showing my husband all the bikes I wanted, he suggested we spend the money on a fly rod and reel. We had been talking about getting in to fly fishing for a while so it was a no-brainer.

Cabelas Prestige rod and reel
We went to Cabelas and found the Prestige kit. It has a rod, reel, line, and all the tools you need to start out. We also found some Cabelas brand waders and boots that were a great price. I was all ready to fish and all for under $400.

The next day we went to the South Platte River near Deckers, CO. I watched my husband cast for a while and he insisted I hop into the river and give it a go. I was very awkward at first, I felt very silly doing something I had never done, but I asked a million questions and tried to mimic his cast over and over.

It took a few days, four to be exact, and I had caught my very first fish in my life. I hunted him down and fished him for what felt like hours. It was the first time I felt that rush of seeing a fish take my fly and fight me to the net. The second I held that tiny rainbow trout in my hands I didn't want to let him go. I was so proud of what I had accomplished. I was hooked.

We got to watch them grow up all summer!

When you're in the river and surrounded by the forest, it is so peaceful. You get to see all kinds of birds, animals and most importantly fish! It truly immerses you into nature and is the best kind of therapy.

It is really important to learn new things in life. Exploring what this wonderful world has to offer is what life is all about. You may fall in love with new activities and sometimes you don't. The point is to try and in the process you may find a new part of yourself. Now go fishing!
